biochem/physiol actions: Ogg1 (8-oxoguanine-DNA glyosylase) is a DNA repair protein that is primarily responsible for repair of 8-oxo-guanine (8-oxo-G). It possesses both DNA glycosylase and AP lyase activity and is a functional analog of the bacteria Fpg. Ogg1 releases 8-oxo-G from mutated DNA and nicks the DNA strand. Although its glycosidase activity is very efficient, its lyase activity is weak and is highest for substrates having a cytosine (C) as the opposite base. Ogg1 is a beta-lyase generating a alpha,beta-unsaturated sugar moiety at the 3'-terminus. Murine Ogg1 displays 84% identity to the human alpha-Ogg1. Its activity is determined on double-stranded oligonucleotide containing 8-oxo-guanine having a C opposite the lesion.
