| Specificity: | | Binds to red blood cell glycophorin C (glycophorin â chain - Gerbich blood group antigen-related). Specifically it binds to the â but not the â1 molecule. Glycophorin C appears to be the earliest expressed glycophorin, and this antibody has been shown to bind strongly to erythoid precursors in all stages of maturation, including pronormoblasts. In flow cytometry 18% of nucleated bone marrow cells, 95.2% of K562 cells, and 42% of HEL cells reacted with this antibody. In studies of phenotypically unusual or abnormal erythrcytes, no preferential reactivity with a particular MN or Ss phenotype was shown. HEMPAS erythrocytes, Tn-activated erythrocytes and erythrocytes from patients with Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria are agglutinated by this antibody. |

| Background: | | CD236 is a minor sialoglycoprotein in human erythrocyte membranes. The blood group Gerbich antigens and receptors for Plasmodium falciparum merozoites are most likely located within the extracellular domain. CD236 (Glycophorin C) plays an important role in regulating the stability of red cells. Expression of Glycophorin C is not restricted to erythroid cells but is broadly distributed in both erythroid and non erythroid tissues. |
