| Background: | A wide variety of environmental and pathophysiological stressful conditions trigger the synthesis of a family of proteins known as heat shock proteins (HSP's), more appropriately called as stress response proteins (SRP's). The Hsp 90 family of proteins in mammalian cells consists of Hsp 90 alpha and beta, Grp 94, and TRAP 1 (Hsp 75). It was found that human TRAP 1 is localized to mitochondria and exhibited ATPase activity that was inhibited by both geldanamycin and radicicol indicating that TRAP 1 has functions that are distinct from those of hsp 90. It was also found that TRAP 1 had a biochemicalactivity to refold denatured retinoblastoma protein (Rb) into its native conformation. |
