| Background: | The CD20 (B1) is a B lymphocyte specific cell surface phosphoprotein with molecular weight of 35 or 37 kDa, depending on the degree of phosphorylation. CD20 is not glycosylated. CD20 is present on both resting and activated B lymphocytes (except plasma cells) and it is expressed synchronous with the expression of surface IgM. Low-level expression of the CD20 has been detected on a subpopulation of T lymphocytes. CD20 is found in secondary follicles of lymphoid tissue and can be expressed on follicular dendritic cells (FDC). The CD20 is a store-operated channel with a tetraspanning membrane topology and upon activation mediates an influx of Ca++ across the plasma membrane - evidence suggests CD20 functions as a B cell Ca++ channel subunit. CD20 regulates signal transduction, cell communication, and B cell activation and proliferation by regulating transmembrane Ca++ transport. |
