| Background: | ARF1 (small GTP-binding ADP-ribosylation factor 1) is a member of the ARFs family which contains five other ARF proteins (1). ARF1 functions in various membrane trafficking events in the ER-Golgi system and in the maintenance of organelle structure. Inactive ARF1 (ARF1-GDP) is localizes in the cytoplasm while the active form (ARF1-GTP) is localized in the membrane (2-3). Active ARF1 also localized to the Golgi complex, regulates the assembly of coat proteins onto membranes and mediates traffic in the ER-Golgi. ATF1 activates phospholipase D and phosphatidyllino- sitol 4-phosphate 5-kinase and recruits COPI to membranes (4-5) |
