| Background: | SUMO I (ubiquitin-like protein SMT3C, Ubiquitin-like protein UBL1, Ubiquitin-like protein SUMO-1) is a 17 kD member of the small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) family, SMT3 subfamily. This nuclear protein has been shown to participate in sumoylation and regulate protein localization, protein stabilization, chromatin structure, DNA binding, and transcription. SUMO I is processed at a diglycine motif by SUMO hydrolase/isopeptidase to generate a free glycine residue that covalently attaches to protein substrates via a lysine residue on target proteins. The covalent attachment of SUMO I results in an approximate 17 kD modification in targeted proteins. SUMO I covalently attaches to a number of proteins including PML, SP100, p53, Mdm2, c-Jun, c-Myb, Sp3, Daxx, topoisomerase I and II, and I kappaB. The Poly6057 antibody was raised against amino acid residues 11-101 of human SUMO I. The Poly6057 antibody recognizes human SUMO I and has been shown to be useful for Western blotting. |
