| Background: | Focal adhesion kinase or FAK is a 125 kD non-receptor tyrosine kinase containing a FAT domain. This kinase localizes to focal adhesion sites after cell adhesion to matrix and shows ubiquitous distribution with highest expression in the brain and lowest expression in the heart and skeletal muscle. FAK is involved in the signaling pathways for cell motility, and proliferation, and apoptosis. Increased FAK kinase activity has been proposed to play a role in oncogenic transformation. FAK is activated by tyrosine-phosphorylation on multiple residues in response to either integrin clustering or G-protein coupled receptor activation (bombesin, lysophosphatidic acid) or LDL receptor activation. FAK has been reported to interact with p130-Cas,Grb2, c-Src, STAT1, integrin beta1 and beta2, ezrin, and paxillin. Alternate splice variants of FAK have been reported. The Poly6038 antibody recognizes human and mouse FAK and has been shown to be useful for Western blotting. |
