| Background: | Principal Names: Retinal and anterior neural fold Homeobox (Rax); Retinal Homeobox protein Rx; Official Gene Symbol: RAX Gen Bank Accession Number: NP_038463 Gene ID: 30062 (Human) Gene Map Locus: 18q21.32 (Human) Rax, a novel transcription factor, is a human homolog of Drosophila Rx protein. It is a significant member of Rx protein family and consists of a highly-conserved N-terminal DNA-binding paired-like Homeodomain. It interacts with PCE-1 and is one of the earliest expressed proteins stimulating establishment and proliferation of retinal progenitor cells. Its expression is essential in determining the fate of normal eye development. Irregular expression of Rax has profound effects on eye morphogenesis. Mutations in Rax gene have been detected in clinical conditions like Anophthalmia and Sclerocornea. |
