| Background: | Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is the prototypic member of the long pentraxin family sharing the C-terminal domain with short pentraxins (C-reactive protein and serum amyloid P component) and containing a unique N-terminal domain. The protein is a soluble pattern recognition receptor and represents a nonredundant component of the humoral innate immunity against selected pathogens. PTX3 is rapidly produced and released at inflammatory sites by diverse cell types including monocytes/macrophages, endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, fibroblasts, and adipocytes. It interacts with several ligands, including growth factors, extracellular matrix components and selected pathogens. PTX3 has been implicated in vascular damage, angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, and restenosis. |
